A glass dropper bottle is a handy and necessary thing. Thankfully, they are reusable. Use this 5-step process to clean glass dropper bottles quickly and easily.
Glass dropper bottles easily store our tinctures and other products, and take them easily with just a light squeeze. Dark glass protects our mixes from sun damage, which means that with proper care, we can reuse them for years to come. Below are the detailed cleaning steps.
Step 1: Rinse everything
Pour some hot water into the bottle, reattach the cap with the pipette intact, and shake everything up well.
Drain the water completely. Rinse multiple times if some dried herbs or other items are still stuck to the bottle.
Step 2: Take everything apart
Open the bottle and remove the pipette from the cap. Usually, the pipette will be twisted out or pulled out with a gentle pull.
Step 3: Vinegar soak
Put all the pieces in a sink or small tub and cover with vinegar. Let everything soak for at least 10 minutes, longer is fine.
The acid in the vinegar helps remove discoloration and other debris easily from jars and pipettes.
After soaking, rinse everything in hot water.
Step 4: Soap bath
Put all pieces in a sink and fill with hot soapy water. Let everything soak for at least 10 minutes, longer is absolutely fine.
Now clean the bottle, pipette, and cap. The pipette and lid are easiest to access with some sort of cotton swab. Regular cotton swabs, the kind most of us use for our ears, work in smaller bottles. For longer pipettes, the wooden handle 6" long cotton tip applicator is more suitable.
They're relatively cheap and make the process easier (and have many other uses, so it's worth a shot). A cotton swab is also applied to the bottom of the bottle. After cleaning, rinse everything well to remove any soap or other residue.
If the jar has a label on it, it should come off relatively easily after soaking. If necessary, use a razor blade to scrape off any remaining adhesive.
Step 5: Dry
Let everything sit on a plate drainer or towel until completely dry, then place the pipette back in the lid, which is then stored on the dropper bottle until ready to use.
